The Coptic Church traces its origins back to St. Mark the Evangelist, who established it in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in Alexandria around 43 A.D. The church upholds the Nicene Creed and has a rich history of defending the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ’s divinity. St. Athanasius, the twentieth Pope of the Coptic Church, played a significant role in affirming this doctrine at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D., earning him titles such as “Father of Orthodoxy” and “the Apostolic.”

The term “Coptic” is derived from the Greek word “Aigyptos,” meaning “Egyptian.” When the Arabs arrived in the seventh century, they referred to the Egyptians as “qibt,” which eventually encompassed both “Egyptians” and “Christians.”

The Copts have staunchly defended the “Original Faith” over the ages against numerous challenges, embodying the essence of Orthodoxy. The church’s establishment in Egypt fulfills God’s promise as foretold in Isaiah, symbolizing His presence and an altar to be raised in the land.

The Coptic Church holds a significant place among the major Christian centers globally, alongside Jerusalem, Antioch, and Rome, later joined by Constantinople. The School of Alexandria played a pivotal role in Christendom by introducing allegorical and spiritual interpretations of Scripture.

Originating from Egypt, the Christian monastic movement influenced the church’s direction towards spiritual practices, contrasting with temporal influences from the royal court. Despite facing internal and external challenges over time, the Egyptian Church has steadfastly upheld its faith.

With deep historical roots and a commitment to apostolic traditions, the Coptic Church remains relevant by embracing modernity through its timeless faith. It exudes a rich evangelical and ascetic heritage, emphasizing heavenly worship and spiritual rituals while cherishing human culture.

The church is renowned for its multitude of saints across different walks of life who reflect sanctity and devotion to God. By prioritizing a sanctified life and spiritual communion, the Coptic Church maintains a balance between faith and intellectual pursuits.
